Pulmonary Artery Banding is Still a Valuable Option

چکیده
In this work, Corno (1) presents long-term outcomes in a small group of patients with multiple ventricular septal defects treated with adjustable pulmonary artery banding (PAB). The results were satisfactory, with few complications. Despite recent progress in pediatric cardiac surgery, surgical management of very small babies with true Swiss cheese septum and cardiac failure is still challenging and PAB remains an option. Optimizing classical PAB is very much a matter of experience and a number of “tricks” were developed to avoid the following two major issues:

Indications, Results and Mortality of Pulmonary Artery Banding Procedure: a Brief Review and Five- year Experiences
Background Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) is a technique of palliative surgical therapy used by congenital heart surgeons as a staged approach to operative correction of congenital heart defects. Materials and Methods We report 5- year experiences from January 2011 to January 2016 of Imam Reza Hospital center (a tertiary referral hospital in Mashhad city, North East of Iran) that consist of 50 ...
متن کاملPulmonary artery banding: still a valuable option in developing countries?
OBJECTIVE We examined whether the socio-economic circumstances of a developing country justify pulmonary artery banding (PAB) for the deferral of perceived high-risk patients requiring biventricular repair. METHODS A retrospective cohort analysis was done on 143 consecutive patients with ventricular anatomy suitable for a biventricular repair, who had a pulmonary artery band applied between 1...

Background: The surgical approach of neonates with a functionally univentricular heart, transposition of the great arteries and excessive pulmonary blood ̄ow remains a challenge. Pulmonary artery banding remains a valuable option, but may induce ventricular hypertrophy, restriction of the bulboventricular foramen and dysplastic changes of the pulmonary valve. These secondary changes might compro...

Radioisotope lung scanning was used to investigate the distribution of pulmonary blood flow after banding of the pulmonary artery in children with a left-to-right shunt and pulmonary hypertension. An abnormal distribution of blood flow in the lung on the side of the operation approach was observed in all patients in the first three weeks following surgery. Abnormalities were still observed in 1...

A 14-year-old female patient underwent right single living-donor lobar lung transplantation for bronchiolitis obliterans after bone marrow transplantation. The patient experienced a complication with severe hypoxemia requiring venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which appeared to result from significant ventilation-perfusion mismatch caused by preferential ventilation of the transpl...
